Alderwood was originally part of Col Sam Smith’s lands — no not that Sam Smith — Smith was a much maligned official who was the target of Robert Gourlay for his perceived lack of talent. In response to this campaign, Col Sam Smith did what any reasonable politician in the 1800s would do — he used his power and influence to get Gourlay arrested. Smith later sold his lands, which would go from farmland to a private residence, and finally to part of the Etobicoke municipality.As an older suburb, Alderwood has more character than newer neighbourhoods — with mature trees, and a mixture of WWII style homes and newer constructed two-storey houses. The condo scene is quite modest — there are only a few buildings in the area, and most Alderwood condos are found in townhome complexes.This is a family-first neighbourhood; there are several schools in the area for English and French-immersion, expansive grasslands to the west at Etobicoke Valley Park, and many community and recreation centres. While single-family homes in the area can garner steep price tags, this neighbourhood is very desirable area for first-time homebuyers, and Alderwood condos provide some savings compared to houses.Brown’s Line serves as main street for the neighbourhood, though it is largely indiscernible from other streets in the area — aside from a cluster of stores on its southern end. Businesses tend to be service driven, most of which are in the food and beverage industry. There are no major shopping centres in the neighbourhood, but Sherway Gardens is just north of Evans Avenue. Alderwood condos are geared towards families — you won’t find Toronto condos for sale in towering high-rises or massive block buildings here, as new developments have been designed to match the community, and residents tend to favour townhouses over modern condo layouts.If you’re planning to call this neighbourhood home, you can expect to have a largely residential living experience. The majority of developments are focused around Evans Avenue and Brown’s Line — there’s plenty of convenient shops and grocery stores nearby, but if you’re looking for a vibrant nightlife then you’ll need to look elsewhere.Alderwood condos are light on amenities but generous on square footage — properties like Humber Mews Townhomes are an attractive spot for those looking to break into the market or downsizing from a single-family home. Alderwood is a walkable neighbourhood but also one with convenient public transit options; there are bus routes criss-crossing the area, and Long Branch Station is on Brow Drive for GO Transit.Being bounded by Lake Shore Boulevard and the Gardiner Expressway, makes it easy to get in and out of the city in a hurry — and makes Alderwood condos especially appealing to car owners.
