The origins of Flemingdon Park go back to the 1950s, when the city of Toronto began to envision an apartment neighbourhood to house the influx of immigrants following world war II; the idea wasn’t popular, but it went ahead, nonetheless. Fast forward to modern day, and Flemingdon Park is a diverse residential North York neighbourhood with a large south-Asian population.There are very few detached houses in the neighbourhood, as most residents live in apartment buildings or Flemingdon Park condos; there are also some modern housing developments comprised of attached houses and Toronto townhouses. Despite the number of high-rises, this area has a wealth of green spaces and an abundance of natural scenery.Flemingdon Park was designed to serve families — there are several schools in the area, daycares, and recreation centres. Don Mills Road is where residents will find the majority of the action in the community; a small commercial space for restaurants, retail spaces, and the Ontario Science Centre.Entertainment options tend to be recreation focused — skating rinks, a golf course, baseball diamonds, hiking trails, and playgrounds — but there are some nearby restaurants where residents can relax with a drink. Flemingdon Park has a healthy condo scene — there are over a dozen condo buildings, plus townhome complexes and apartments. Most Flemingdon Park condos were constructed in the 70s, and while some buildings show their age, they offer expansive units at reasonable prices: 715 Don Mills Condos and Wynford Condominiums are prime examples.In keeping with the family-friendly theme, most condos feature swimming pools and offer the usual amenities like exercise rooms, saunas, and on-site security. Flemingdon Park condos are centered around Don Mills Road and Wynford Drive, which provides residents with nearby green spaces and recreational activities.Prospective buyers who are looking for an urban location aren’t going to be thrilled by buildings in the area; however, buyers who are trying to break into the market for the first time would be wise to keep an open mind. Flemingdon Park condos have a Walk Score of 63 — residents can likely accomplish some errands on foot, but most will need a vehicle or public transit. Speaking of public transit, options are also somewhat lacking; there are several bus routes in the area on Don Mills Road, Gateway Boulevard, Linkwood Line, and Eglinton. Unfortunately, a lack of subway service and GO Transit might make travel to downtown difficult.Drivers are likely to have an easier time getting from point A to B — the Don Valley Parkway cuts through the neighbourhood with nearby on-ramps on Eglinton Avenue.
